Anything BUTT Ordinary | Sherry Butt
In search of a romantic night out, we popped into the relatively recently opened Sherry Butt in the early hours of the evening for a nice cocktail and some munchies.
It looks like a spot straight out of Brooklyn. The atmosphere is a perfect marriage between the uber-crowded and fashionable cocktail bars of Saint-Germain and the underground hipster hangouts of the Bastille. The industrial feel of the bar stools and cinderblock walls is juxtaposed with comfortable velvet couches and lounge chairs and low mood lighting. Hip but not so hip that it comes off as pretentious.
Cathleen and Amaury, the minds behind Sherry Butt are both graduates of the ECC group, having perfected their cocktail skills at Curio Parlor and Prescription Cocktail Club. With this kind of background, it is no surprise that the cocktails here are excellent. Their list of 11 cocktails feature unique ingredients, including a selection of homemade syrups and the prices for these creations come in at 12-13 euro each. Each drink is served in a chilled glass from the temperature controlled glass refrigerators behind the bar.
What is most impressive about this place, however, is that Cathleen and Amaury have not only focused on the quality of their cocktails but they have hand selected a small menu of exceptional beers from Scotland, USA, Belgium, and Canada, whisky flights with four suggested options or the opportunity to create your own and taste their selection of whiskys, and finally a small but excellent menu of finger food.
We sampled four options from the food menu as our dinner and were impressed by the variety and restaurant-quality of the food. This is definitely not your average bar food. Each dish is served on slate platters (to fit in with the chalkboard theme of the bar) and varies in price from the 5 euro olive tapenade to the 18 euro two-person serving of Pata Negra. The fois gras is infused with Japanese whisky and the mozzarella and pesto tartine is creamy and fresh and perfectly refreshing. The menu changes seasonally.
After the explosion of the ECC bars throughout Paris a few years ago, this is definitely a new generation of cocktail bars that are starting to pop up. Sherry Butt is definitely one to add to the list of our favorite spots in Le Marais (although more on the boarder of the Bastille) and it is their dedication to making sure every detail of Sherry Butt is unique, interesting and perfect that will ensure their success in the Parisian bar scene.Sherry Butt 20 rue Beautreillis, 75004 Metro: Saint-Paul or Bastille Open Tuesday – Saturday from 6pm-2am & Sunday – Monday from 8pm-2am
