SFP Favorites | Oliver Brown Salon
In the blogging community, we are all well versed in product pushes and service features that give company exposure, but aren’t really truly vetted by the bloggers who feature them. That is why we at Savoir Faire Paris pride ourselves on the products and services we share on Paris: Up Close and Personal. We are here to do the work for you and give you our recommendations on services that we find genuinely useful in our own private lives, and so I am really excited to share with you one of our favorite new finds!
You may have heard about StylePixie Salon. It is a hair and nail studio just south of Paris and popular within the English expat community. Recently, the owner of the salon moved up to Germany and left behind a legacy to be filled by Dean Brown and Givi Oliver. Together, these previous members of StylePixie Salon decided to take the jump and open up the new and improved Oliver Brown Salon. We were lucky enough to try out their services before they officially opened their doors and I can honestly say that I was so satisfied with the job that Givi did.
I came in hesitant as I had tried so many hair dressers in Paris and none of them seemed to listen to what I wanted: a natural looking blonde with that coveted and oh-so-french wind swept look. Each time, I left with my hair looking mildly like an early 2000’s MTV Artist of the Year. It seemed chunky, unnatural, and made me want to give up on highlighting my hair all together. As you can see in the photos, it had been a while since I had had my hair highlighted because my previous experience had been particularly scarring. Givi later said that the hair culture in France is much different than in the US. In France, there is less of a relationship and collaboration between the stylist and client. Many times, the client just sits in the chair and lets the stylist do their thing. Although I gave her free reign of my hair, Givi kept with the vision I saw for myself. I wanted a “do” that would enhance what I liked about myself: the played down make up, the attempt to seem effortlessly chic, and a playful windswept shoulder-length cut. In order to best exemplify the work Givi did on my hair, I have attached these somewhat embarrassing before and after photos.
In addition to doing some major work on my mane, I had the chance to chat with Givi and really get to know her and Dean’s backgrounds and inspiration behind opening an “Anglo-friendly” salon. Givi told me about her childhood spent between the UK and France. She had the ability to see from both sides as someone who has lived, grown, and flourished in another country. Givi is able to take her knowledge of her time spent in the UK and sympathize with expats in Paris. Although France is more her textbook definition of home, she has coped with her own struggles living with multiple nationalities. Because both she and Dean have this first-hand knowledge, they sought out to create a space beyond just a hair salon. Oliver Brown strives for the sense of community and that feeling of home many miss while living abroad. The duo want to foster a business that lets their clients stay for a while to chat with others, to develop relationships with their stylists, and to create a room of familiar faces in a familiar language. Check out the photos below to get a preview of this awesome space and don’t forget to book ahead for Saturday’s Mimosa Mornings, or a gin and tonic if that’s more to your liking!
Oliver Brown is currently having an opening promotion where all of their services are 15% percent off throughout October and November 2017.
